When to get your haircut before a wedding

A wedding haircut is the one cut that gets photographed from every angle and looked at for the next forty years. The most common mistake isn't the style — it's the timing.

Cut three days before, not the day before

Hair needs a few days to settle. A haircut on the morning of the wedding looks freshly cut in photographs: too sharp at the edges, too obviously new, and with no chance to correct anything. Two to four days before is the sweet spot. The lines have softened just enough, and you still have time to visit again if something isn't right.

Have a trial cut a month out

If you're changing your style for the wedding, do it four to six weeks in advance with the same barber. You'll see how it grows, how it photographs, and whether you can style it yourself on the morning. Then repeat it three days before the day. No surprises.

Ask for the cut you already wear, done perfectly

Weddings are not the moment for an experiment. Tell your barber it's for a wedding — it changes how they work. Expect more time on the detail: the neckline, the sideburn balance, the connection between hair and beard, and a finish that photographs cleanly under strong light.

Beard and skin

Book the beard work at the same appointment so the shapes are balanced against each other. If you're having a full hot towel shave, do it the day before rather than the morning of — skin needs a few hours to settle. A face clean or spa treatment a few days ahead helps in photographs more than most grooms expect.

Planning the group

For groomsmen and family, book consecutive appointments with different barbers so the group moves through together.
