How to find the best barber in Koh Samui

Koh Samui has no shortage of places to get your hair cut. Between Chaweng, Lamai, Maenam and Bophut you'll pass a dozen signs offering a haircut in a single afternoon. The gap between the best and the rest, though, is wide — and it has very little to do with price.

Here is what we look for when we judge a shop, written by people who run one.

1. Look at the finish, not the photos

Anyone can post a photo of a fresh fade under good lighting. What tells you more is the detail at the edges: the line at the temple, the blend behind the ear, the neckline. A skilled barber leaves no visible step between guard lengths and no hard line where a fade should dissolve into skin. If a shop's gallery only ever shows the top of the head, that's usually because the sides don't hold up.

2. See whether they consult before they cut

A good haircut starts with a conversation, not a clipper. Two minutes spent asking how you wear your hair, how often you'll come back and what you can be bothered to do at home will change the entire result. If someone reaches for the machine before asking a single question, expect a generic cut.

The cut has to work on day fourteen, not just on the way out of the door.

3. Check the hygiene, quietly

Fresh towel for each guest. A clean cape. Blades that come out of a sanitiser rather than a drawer. Single-use razor blades, always. This is basic in a professional shop and it is worth thirty seconds of your attention when you walk in, because it says a great deal about everything else you can't see.

4. Ask whether they cut hair like yours

Straight European hair, thick Asian hair, curls and Afro-textured hair all behave differently under a clipper and need different techniques. On a tourist island, a shop that works on a broad mix of hair types every day builds a range that a purely local or purely tourist-facing shop rarely develops. It's a fair question to ask, and any confident barber will answer it happily.

5. Judge the room

A barbershop is a service, not just a transaction. Air conditioning that actually works matters in Samui. So does whether you're offered a seat, whether the music is at a level where you can talk, and whether the barber finishes properly — brushing you down, checking the back with a mirror, showing you the product they used.
