A fade is cut inside the standard men's haircut, so the decision is about the look, not a separate booking. These are the terms your barber will use.
Skin fade
The shortest point goes down to the skin, then climbs into the longer hair above. The sharpest, cleanest option — and the one that grows out fastest.
Taper fade
A softer gradient that leaves a little length at the bottom, usually kept to the sideburns and neckline. Tidy without a hard contrast.
Low, mid or high
Where the fade begins on the side of the head. Low sits just above the ear, mid around the temple, high closer to the parietal ridge. Say the height you want and your barber cuts to it.
A Fade Should Suit More Than Your Hair
The fade that photographs well on someone else may not sit the same way on you. Worth thinking about before the clippers start:
- Hair type — straight, wavy, curly and coarse hair each hold a blend differently.
- Head shape — where the fade starts changes how the sides and crown read.
- Length on top — a fade is a relationship between the sides and what's above them.
