How often should men cut their hair?

Hair grows around one to one and a half centimetres a month. That's the average — but the honest answer to how often you should cut it depends far less on growth rate than on the shape you're carrying.

A schedule by style

  • Skin fade or very short crop — every 2 to 3 weeks. The contrast that makes the cut work disappears fastest.
  • Taper fade or short back and sides — every 3 to 4 weeks.
  • Medium length, textured or side part — every 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Longer scissor cuts and grown-out styles — every 8 to 10 weeks, mostly to remove split ends and keep the weight balanced.
  • Shaved head — every 1 to 2 weeks if you want the edges kept clean by a barber rather than by yourself.

The signs it's time

Forget the calendar for a moment. You need a cut when the hair starts sitting differently in the morning, when it takes more product to hold the same shape, when the sides begin to puff outwards rather than lie flat, or when the neckline starts creeping down. Those four signals are more reliable than any schedule.

Why the tropics change the maths

In Koh Samui, humidity swells the hair shaft and heat makes bulk uncomfortable. Guests who take a 4 on the sides at home often find they prefer a 2 or 3 here, and that they'd rather come in every three weeks than every five. Sun exposure also lightens and dries the ends faster, so regular trimming keeps the hair looking healthy rather than straw-like.

If you're growing it out

Growing your hair still requires a barber. A shape-up every six to eight weeks — removing weight, keeping the outline deliberate, tidying the neck — is the difference between a considered longer style and an awkward in-between phase. Tell your barber clearly that you're growing it out so they take off as little as possible.

The best haircut schedule is the one you'll actually keep. Pick a style that suits how often you can sit in a chair.

Book the next one before you leave

The simplest habit in men's grooming: book your next appointment before you walk out of the shop. It costs nothing, it holds your preferred barber and time, and it means you never spend a fortnight looking slightly overdue.

All FAQs
How often should I get a haircut?
For a tight fade, every two to three weeks keeps it looking intentional. A medium-length cut holds its shape for four to six weeks, and longer scissor styles can stretch to eight. In the heat and humidity of Koh Samui, most guests find they prefer a slightly shorter cut and a slightly more frequent visit.
I'm growing my beard out — should I still come in?
Yes, and this is the stage where most beards go wrong. A light shape-up every three to four weeks keeps the neckline and cheek lines clean while the length grows underneath, so it reads as deliberate instead of neglected. Tell your barber you're growing it out and they'll take off as little as possible.
Can I keep the same barber every visit?
Absolutely, and we'd encourage it if you've found someone whose work you like. A barber who has cut your hair before knows how it grows and how you wear it, which makes every following visit faster and more consistent. Just choose them again when you book.
