How long does a fade last?
How long a fade stays sharp, why skin fades grow out faster than tapers, and when to book your next appointment.
A fade looks its sharpest for roughly the first two weeks. After that it does not disappear, it softens — the blend rises, the guard lines start to show and the neckline loses its edge.
A realistic timeline
- Days 1 to 7: crisp. The blend is invisible and the lines are clean.
- Days 8 to 14: still smart. The lowest section begins to fill in.
- Days 15 to 21: soft. Most people book a line-up around here.
- Week 4 onward: the fade has grown into the length above it.
Why skin fades go first
A skin fade starts at zero, so a few millimetres of growth is a visible change. A taper starts at a longer guard, which means the same growth shows far less. If you want the sharpest possible look, expect a shorter interval between visits; if you want a cut that ages gracefully, ask for a taper.
What speeds it up
Hair growth rates vary, but dark, thick or coarse hair shows regrowth against the skin sooner. Sun, sea water and daily washing dry the hair out, which makes a growing fade look untidier than it really is.
The maintenance visit
A quick tidy of the sides and neckline between full haircuts is the cheapest way to keep the shape. It takes far less time than a full cut and buys you another couple of weeks. Ask your barber at the end of your appointment when they would like to see you back.

- Shampoo two or three times a week rather than daily, condition each time, and always rinse with fresh water after swimming in the sea. Use a small amount of a matte clay rather than a heavy pomade, which softens in the heat. Don't attempt the fade or the neckline yourself — a ten-minute line-up in the shop restores far more than a home clipper ever will.
